Recovery Coach New YorkThe most important day for a recovering addict is today.

Most people spend so much of their day living in the past or the future, making very little time to be present. A lot of the stuff we worry about in the future will never happen, and what’s in the past cannot be changed. Living in the present day is crucial in recovery because if you try to take on too much at one time—it could lead to a disaster.

The motto “a day at a time” is a great one staying present in recovery, and though may be hard to comprehend in the beginning, over time it becomes easier to practice staying in the moment.

Here are our top 5 tips for keeping it in today:

  1. Make a to- do list, for today. If you get a couple things on the list accomplished, that is enough for today.
  2. When you find yourself wrapped up in problems or fear- talk to someone in your recovery network.
  3. When you get stuck thinking about the past or future- Remember that you are where your feet are. Here.
  4. Try to meditate and practice deep breathing. Whether it’s two minutes or fifteen, meditation can help ground you.
  5. Move a muscle, change a thought. Exercise is an important component to a recovery program because it has physical and mental effects that relax the body and mind.

Practice these tips and enjoy a better day, because you are present. There is no better time than now.
