When we think of bucket lists we think of grand adventures. Those someday things we dream about doing when the time is right. We probably all have one, but why are we waiting? Let’s make room on the shelf for another bucket, filled with stuff to do to feel good today.

Top toss into that bucket is connecting with yourself. Self-care comes in all shapes and forms and committing to a practice of calming coping skills like moving meditation or a gratitude journal can get you started. Nature has a positive effect on both body and mind so set your mind to get out there and do something active you enjoy. You need rest to support your physical and mental health – set a goal for a regular relaxing bedtime routine and get some sleep!

Next, throw in some socialization. Interaction with others can give you a boost of happiness while reducing stress so set a goal to be the one to reach out. Invite a friend for coffee or join a club where you can share a common interest. Being kind to others, making a practice of paying a compliment or holding open a door can improve your well-being. Extend your kindness to volunteering at an animal shelter, community kitchen or literacy program – any cause that aligns with your heart.

There’s plenty of room left to fill your bucket up with whatever makes you feel good. Getting creative can distract you from your troubles so pick up an old or start a new hobby. Finally clearing out the clutter from your closet or your inbox will open up your space and your mind. Escape into that space by setting a time each day to stop scrolling and pick up a book. Reading keeps your brain active and promotes mental and emotional wellness.

A bucket list is where you put your wishes. Not just what you want to do, but how you want to be. By all means have that long-term bucket list for all your adventures. And fill a bucket with your short-term goals for what you need to feel good every day.
