If life seems jolly rotten, there’s something you’ve forgotten!
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
– Eric Idle, “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”

As they say, laughter is the best medicine. A study published by the National Library of Medicine concluded that “using laughter to minimize short-term and long-term stresses can significantly improve the quality of life.” And a report published by the APA found that “laughter was 30 times more frequent in social situations than solitary ones.” Good thing there’s places you can go where you can laugh out loud.

Laughter Yoga, inspired by the idea that laughter is the universal language of joy, was created by Dr. Madan Kataria. Also known as The Laughter Guru, Dr. Kataria designed his practice combining laughter exercises and breathing techniques to increase positivity and lower stress by inspiring deliberate laughter. In-person classes are available nationwide and are a great way to chill out and have fun in a communal setting.

And bringing together the joyful act of voluntary laughter with the calming breathwork of yoga doesn’t stop there. The International Laughter Club is free, is fun, is a Zoom space where like-minded people from all over the world meet every day for fun and childlike play. They smile, they dance, they evolve together as a group into peals of real and contagious laughter. It’s a virtual laugh factory!

Joining in on either of these activities will put a smile on your face and a spring to your step. Sometimes a distraction is just the thing to get out of our heads and away from the worries. Manage your stress by taking a break to do something fun and laugh.
