Wash, rinse, repeat – the shampoo instructions that have become a metaphor for being fixed in established routines. Like the routines students stick to not necessarily because they’re beneficial, but because they’re familiar. Complacency hinders progress so it’s important to encourage students to break free of those unproductive habit loops and challenge themselves to stretch and progress.

One way to get them out of the repeat cycle is to do a habit audit. This open eyed review of their behaviors prompts them to “assess current behaviors and intentionally build healthier ones … by replacing detrimental routines with positive actions.” It can help them pinpoint what’s working well and where they can improve.

Ask your student write down all their daily habits, no matter how mundane. Everything they can think of from first thing in the morning to last at night. Then have them rate each item as they see it, either “positive” (promotes emotional well-being, enhances learning) or “needs improvement” (generates anxiety, creates distractions). For example: review daily assignments over breakfast = positive, being on the phone in bed at night = needs improvement.

When they’re done, sit down with your student and review the list. Provide positive feedback as you discuss their findings and guide them toward reflecting on items that need improvement. Encourage their curiosity by suggesting they ask themselves open ended questions like “Why do I do it this way?” or “Is this the best way to do it?”. It gets them going on reevaluating habits and leads them to ask further questions on how they can create positive change.

Which means making a plan. Speak with your student about picking one thing to start with, something that’s immediately actionable and they’re confident can be a smooth shift. Exchange ideas about best ways to achieve this goal and how you can support them in reaching it. Accountability is key so schedule a sit down after the first week to assess how the plan is working. If adjustments need to be made, make them. Flexibility and revisions are all part of the process as they reshape their routines.

Stirring up habit loops takes consistency, patience and time. Every small step out of the cycle is a win to be celebrated as a positive action toward reaching their goals and continuing to progress emotionally and academically.
