Although they’ve been physically back in school, your student may still feel like the lone fish searching for their school. For students who are floundering, feeling a little lost either emotionally or academically, peer-to-peer groups are a place where they can find support.
Students live within a unique set of circumstances and being in a supportive peer environment can provide them a safe space to share their ideas and explore new challenges. A review of studies of peer support found that it’s associated with “improvements in mental health, greater happiness, self-esteem … and reductions in depression, loneliness and anxiety.” It is also reported that peer support “improves coping and self-management skills”.
Meeting new people can be tough for everyone. Encourage them to dip their toes in the water and start out easy when investigating groups of like-minded peers for academic support, emotional support, or just to have fun with. Guidance counselors are an excellent resource and may have information about peer mentoring programs. Check with the local library or community center for information on programs or clubs in your town. The important thing is to find a space where they can be free to be themselves.
What extracurricular activities peak their interest? Intramural sports are a great way for your student to be active while having a good time. Drama clubs are always looking for crew members, the yearbook or school paper could need photographers. Volunteering for service projects in the community is a way for them to join in and give back.
Getting out there and giving it a go may be all your student needs to realize there’s a place for everyone.
