If you’re one of the many who have a walking routine you may think it’s only good for your physical health. And because of that you may be using that time to get caught up on texts or participate in conference calls. By double tasking during your walk you’re missing out on the other great benefit, the restorative power it can bring to your emotional health. When you walk, unplug and take an awe walk.
Taking an awe walk is a meditative practice where you shift your attention from what’s on your mind to what’s around you. As you walk, open your senses and appreciate the little things. Listen to the songs of the birds. Feel the breeze coming through the trees. See the sculpted architecture at the top of a building. Like a kid at the planetarium your senses will be filled with everything happening around you, helping to quiet your mind so you can feel at peace.
If walking isn’t a part of your fitness system you can still take yourself out of yourself by starting a practice of everyday awe. Put down your phone and look up as you travel. Listen for the sounds of nature as you go about your day. Awe can be felt everywhere and as experiencing awe becomes more of a natural state your focus will stray away from the negative and toward the positive things in life. Happiness is in the little things that are around us all the time.
