Ah, summertime. When we all slow down just a bit and enjoy relaxing days. Which makes now the perfect time to take advantage of the calmer pace and check back in on the goals we set earlier this year. To congratulate ourselves for all that we have accomplished or, if you’re like scores of others, review why your good intentions fell by the wayside like the crumbs from those cookies you vowed to stay away from.
If your enthusiasm for making positive change petered out, that’s OK. Resolutions, whether made at New Years or birthdays or other milestones can be tough to keep. Studies show that 88% of us have strayed from our resolutions within the first two weeks of making them. Instead of looking back and brooding over what you haven’t done choose instead to be forward thinking and look ahead to all you can do. The good thing about setting goals is it’s always a good time for a fresh start.
Schedule a quiet time to have a sit down with yourself and review any goals you set earlier in the year. Your dreams may have changed with the passage of time so you can keep the ones that are still in line with your wants and needs and chuck the rest. The result will be the start of a new list that you can build on by writing down everything you want to achieve.
Categorize your goals according to short-term and long-term. Short-term goals are things like reading more or eating better. Long-term goals are things like learning another language or completing an advanced degree. When you’re done, select two or three short-term goals to start with. Working toward and reaching those goals will build your self-confidence and can give you the incentive to move on to your long-term goals.
A good long-term goal for your list is to make a mid-year tune-up a regular part of your routine. A scheduled reevaluation will help you stay on track with your goals and make adjustments to undesirable patterns of behavior or old habits that no longer serve you. Every day is a new opportunity to set new goals and there’s no time like the present to get started.
