We all need to rest. You may think of resting as being lazy or unproductive or a luxury you can’t afford. Truth of the matter is you can’t afford not to rest. Research shows that “resting is vital [for] mental and physical health, given its great benefits to our immune system, stress management, mood, decision-making, creativity, and work productivity.” And a study published by the National Library of Medicine says “the defining attributes of rest include a pathway to calm, inner tranquility … resulting [in] renewed physical energy, mental clarity and improved health.” Rest is good for you.
Traditionally Sunday is the unstructured day of rest. Unless, of course, you’re one of the millions who have been glued to the Sunday Reset trend on TikTok. Awash with hints and tips about how you can get everything done in one day it can be inspirational. Or daunting. Cramming all your chores into one day sounds like an efficient way to get things done but before you know it you could be dreading Sunday instead of looking forward to it.
This trend, no matter how enticing, is not for everyone. If your idea of a day of rest is getting all your chores done, go for it. But if feeling pressured to follow the crowd is stressing you out, maybe it’s time to rethink and reschedule that reset. Try leveling out your chore load by taking care of them throughout the week and saving your day off for rest.
“But I don’t have the time during the week!” we all exclaim. With proper organization and time management, turns out we do. By implementing a balanced itinerary that makes time each day for a household task you can succeed in being productive without overloading yourself.
Schedule your chores accordingly for what works best for you. Make a plan to clean out that email inbox after dinner one night a week or clean the bathroom one morning a week before you get in the shower. Establish simple habits for routine maintenance like washing the dishes after every meal or putting things away when you’re done with them. It will lift the burden of having to spend a lot of time in one day to get those things done.
The most important part of your schedule is your day of rest to do whatever you want to do. Sleep late, or get up early then take a nap in the afternoon. Read, journal, take a bike ride. Invite a friend to go to the movies, have brunch or go for a walk through the park. Anything that allows you to unwind so you can end your day in a peaceful way with a good night’s sleep. Giving yourself the gift of a day of rest will allow you to enter your work week restored and ready to go. And if doing the laundry on Sunday gives you a sense of calm, do it. Your day of rest is yours to enjoy however you want.
