As you travel on your recovery journey you want to forge a path of wellness and positive communication with the people in your life. A way to do that is by letting them know what you need and that you are sincere about working with them in a mutually beneficial way. That means creating, establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries.

And that can be difficult, especially if you have to cross bridges that may have been burned while you were engaging in misuse behaviors. By being prepared to clearly express your wishes, and having a willingness to listen, you can create those boundaries with kindness and respect.

  1. What Do You Want

Summon the courage for introspection about how you want to live your life and how you can create it. Taking a good deep look at your situation will help you to identify what you need in order to sustain your sobriety.

  1. How Do You Get It

Before you broach the subject have a clearly defined vision of what it is you want. Use “I” statements to express your feelings, be open to discussions about setting mutual boundaries and have the courage to say “No”.

  1. How Do You Maintain It

Keep the lines of communication open by using more conversation and less accusation. Overcoming misunderstandings now prevents sidestepping and allowing them to fester into the future.

  1. Keeping It Going

Reassess your boundaries as old challenges fall by the wayside and new challenges appear. Acknowledge your accomplishments and identify areas that need improvement to keep boundaries in line with your needs.

  1. Asking For Help

Determining and establishing boundaries doesn’t have to be a lonely road. Speak with a therapist, a coach, a trusted friend or family member for help with defining and expressing your needs.

Setting boundaries prioritizes your well-being while building the relationships that support your recovery. You must feel good about your boundaries in order for them to be maintained so do it with understanding and kindness, for yourself and for the people in your life.
