Even if you like telling yourself that your social drinking is harmless, you may be questioning your drinking habits. And that’s a good thing. Being sober curious, choosing to take a break from heading straight to the bar after work or at parties, opens a door that you may not have seen before. It’s an opportunity for you to take a good look at how you live your life and decide if you’re really where you want to be.

Think about why you’re sober curious. Is it truly just to fit in, swept up in the latest trend along with your friends? Or is it something more. Being sober curious with others provides a sense of safety, that you’re not the only one who needs that liquid courage. Maybe you’ve already been thinking the drinking and how you feel the next morning has become a bit out of hand. Maybe it’s a relief to go out and not be expected to drink.

Maybe this movement was exactly what you needed to evaluate your drinking. To give you the other kind of courage, the courage to actually look at how your drinking affects your life. Social drinking can become a slippery slope careening down into alcohol misuse before you even know it. Being sober curious can help you find the brakes to stop the descent and give you the opportunity to make better choices about your drinking and for your life.

It’s a great soft way to experience sobriety. It gives you an out, being able to tell yourself that you’re just giving it a shot, that it doesn’t have to be a full time thing, you can always grab a drink later or tomorrow or again. You can try it on and see if it fits. If it’s comfortable and feels good you could decide to give it a couple of days. Those days could turn into weeks, months, years. You may find that partaking in the sober curious movement will change your life in ways you never expected.

Sober curious is a gateway to sobriety. A path to living your life in the light of day rather than wallowing in the shadows of alcohol. Anytime you have an inkling about making positive change, embrace it. Allow your sober curiosity to propel you toward sober courage.
