Oh, the anticipation of holiday stress. Just thinking about it can create stress about the stress. Why bundle it all on? Give yourself a break and ditch the stress this season.

Self-care cannot be emphasized enough. Proper diet, sticking to your exercise routine and plenty of sleep are essential to feeling good. And when you feel good you’re less stressed. Lean on your support team for help. Keeping in touch with your coach or therapist and going to meetings are all great ways to maintain your emotional balance.

Pressure to overspend can be curbed by being creative about holiday gifts. A gesture can be worth more to loved ones than tangible items. Offer to babysit or help around the house. Make a plan to spend one-on-one time with a friend post-season when schedules are less hectic. Being generous with your time can make you happy at the same time.

Focus on living in the moment and dealing with events as they happen. There’s no sense in anticipating trouble when there’s none to be had. You may just find that the situation you thought would be fraught with tension is, in fact, fun. If you must anticipate, try anticipating having a good time.

Holidays come and go but your mental health and sobriety need to be tended to all throughout the year. Take the steps to reduce your seasonal stress and allow yourself to enjoy everything good that the season brings.
